Data Visualizations

Visualizing Digital Safety

The data visualizations in the Noraa app turn complex cybersecurity information into clear, digestible insights. By using simplified charts, graphs, and interactive elements, users can quickly understand their digital habits, potential risks, and areas for improvement. These visuals don’t just present data, they help tell a story, making abstract concepts more relatable and actionable.

🔹 Track Digital Behavior
Users can monitor their online habits through clear, easy-to-read charts that encourage safer choices.

🔹 Spot Risks at a Glance
Visual cues and color-coded indicators help users quickly identify potential vulnerabilities.

🔹 Learn by Seeing
Interactive visuals turn abstract security concepts into tangible insights that users can understand and apply.

Challenges

Cybersecurity is often presented in overly technical, inaccessible ways that leave everyday users feeling overwhelmed or apathetic. Many college students, while tech-savvy, lack the tools or awareness to actively manage their personal security online. This gap creates unnecessary risks and leaves students vulnerable to threats like phishing, password breaches, and data theft.

The Goal

Design a user-friendly platform that:

  • Makes cybersecurity education engaging and approachable

  • Helps users understand their own digital habits and risks

  • Encourages safer online behavior through personalized tools and insights

Research

User interviews and secondary research revealed that students want cybersecurity tools that are:

  • Easy to understand and act on

  • Visually engaging, not overly text-heavy

  • Integrated into their existing routines

Insights led to the decision to create an experience that blends education, utility, and trust-building design

Persona

Jordan Harper

Age: 20

Major: Communications

Background: Jordan is an active social media user and often completes assignments using public Wi-Fi on campus. She stores most passwords in her notes app and admits to reusing the same few passwords across platforms. She’s never checked if her accounts have been part of a data breach.

Goals:

  • Gain confidence in managing her digital privacy

  • Understand risks in her everyday habits

  • Use a tool that fits easily into her daily routine

Frustrations:

  • Overwhelmed by jargon in cybersecurity content

  • Doesn’t know where to begin with protecting her accounts

  • Distrustful of apps that feel too complex or invasive

Needs:

  • Clear, actionable insights about her own digital behavior

  • A visual way to track progress and security improvements

  • Encouragement and education without fear tactics

Outcome

Since Noraa is a conceptual project, usability testing was simulated through peer feedback and user flows. The outcome showed strong engagement with visual tools and enthusiasm for the simplified security guidance. The app’s approachable tone and visual storytelling made it easier for users to understand hard-to-grasp concepts and stay interested in their security journey.

Reflection

This project taught me how design can shape trust, especially in topics that feel out of reach for many people. By focusing on tone, storytelling, and clarity, Noraa became more than just a security app, it became a digital companion that gives users ownership of their safety.

This project was a stepping stone for me to learn new software skills and take on the role of sole director with minimal guidance. It means a lot to me, as it pushed me out of my comfort zone and challenged me to grow both creatively and technically.
